Laser hair removal cannot be performed on sun-burnt skin. It is for your own safety and comfort to wait until the sunburn fades away before having a laser hair removal treatment for the area.
There should be no waxing or plucking of the area you want to be treated for at least 3 weeks prior to the laser hair removal treatment.
To ensure the best treatment results, it is necessary for you to shave the treatment area one day before your scheduled appointment.
The treatment areas need to be free of lotion, make up or deodorant. If you have any of these on, you will need to completely wash the products off before being treated.
If you are currently on the medication Accutane or Gold Therapy, or have been in the past 6 months, please let us know. These medication and treatments can make your skin more susceptible to damage from the laser.
Generally, it is best to wait 6 to 8 weeks between treatments. There is no advantage to scheduling your visits closer together even if you do not see immediate results. The laser only targets hair in the growth phase. The next growth phase will be in 4 to 6 weeks.
Post treatment, you may feel like you have a mild to moderate sunburn in the area that was treated. Talk to your laser technician about products that can help to ease sensitive areas. Over the counter Hydrocortisone Cream and Aloe Vera Gel may help with the redness or inflammation of your skin.
Until the redness or inflammation clears away, avoid bathing or washing with very hot water. Use tepid water instead.
Keep the treated area clean. Wash gently. Avoid scrubbing or exfoliating the treatment areas for 48 hours or until all skin sensitivity has subsided.
Avoid direct sun exposure after your treatment. If you do go in the sun, protect the treated area with a full-spectrum sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher.
Do not shave the treated area for at least 4 days after treatment. Do not wax, pluck or use depilatories for the hair that grows back. After laser treatment, hair may continue to grow out as if it were never treated. Typically this will occur for about 2 weeks and then the treated hairs will simply begin to fall out.
Avoid any irritating medications or chemicals, particularly on the face. Examples of these are Retin-A, Benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid or astringents.
Avoid using deodorant or antiperspirant on treated areas for 24 hours after receiving the treatment.
