Levulan is a naturally occurring photosensitizing agent found throughout the body. When applied to the skin and subsequently “activated” by specific wavelength of light (a process called Photodynamic Therapy), it improves the skin texture and smoothness, lightens sun/age spots, evens out skin tone, decreases oiliness of the skin, reduces acne breakouts and improves the appearance of acne scars. Levulan works by being naturally attracted and absorbed by abnormal cells and oil glands, causing damaged skin to shed, and revealing new, revitalized skin.

The treatment is simple: Levulan is applied to the face, you relax while the solution is absorbed, then we activate the solution with our special light. After treatment you will need to stay out of the sun for 48 hours, and apply sunblock and moisturizer to the treated area.

Most clients find the procedure to cause little or no discomfort. Post treatment, it is normal to experience a sun-burn like reaction that may last up to a week. However, Levulan does not cause scarring because it does not get into the dermis (deeper layer) of the skin. In addition, it does not cause any internal side effects since it is only applied topically.

After an in-depth skin analysis consultation, we will recommend a treatment plan that is customized to fit your goals and budget. In most cases, for the treatment of photo-damaged skin (sun damage, prematurely aging), a series of 1-2 treatments are necessary; while for treatment of acne, usually 2-4 treatments. Treatments are spaced 3-4 weeks apart to achieve optimal results.
